Reflections on Food and Sustainability

Words by Natalie Sifuma

In these contemporary times, the question of how we can embrace more healthier and holistic relationships with food seems relevant with each passing day.

Now imagine this:
Wawa Gatheru invites you to an event she's co-hosting that's focused on food and digital content creation. Her only ask is that you show up ready to connect with others who'll be there, and enjoy the plant-based bitings that will be served.

On arrival at PLANTA Restaurants in Brooklyn, the air is thick with excitement. Conversations about food, sustainability, and narratives for social change simmer from lips—and the food; the food at the buffet is very (very) inviting. You get to know more about Jacob Simon and Maggie Baird's work as narrative and food justice changemakers.

As you're dining and mingling, you come to know about 'equitable, plant-based food systems', the subject that has inspired Support+Feed's work at the nexus of climate and food security. You begin to think about the food system landscape in your city, then in your country, and then in Africa... is it truly on the brink of being eco-friendly and equitable?

This narrative-based reflection is thanks to a colourful event we got to attend during #ClimateWeekNYC — and now we carry the conversation on food and sustainability forward with our digital community. Share your musings on how we can adopt more plant-based diets in Africa, or on the progress we've made around food justice and equitable food systems.
